The lifting water under the 24×7 Shimla Water Supply Project is likely to commence by January 2026.
A successful trial was conducted in November 2025 and water was pumped from the Shakroli scheme to Shimla.
Under the project, water is being lifted from the Sutlej at Shakroli village in Sunni tehsil of Shimla district for which 24 km long pipeline has been laid and three pumping stations have been constructed at Shakroli, Dummi and Dwada villages.
The scope of the project includes:
Contract-A: It includes topographical surveys and investigation, GIS mapping of all project facilities under contract-A, hydraulic modelling of transmission mains system, preparation and approval of comprehensive assessment report (CAR), transition handover plan (THP), and operation and maintenance plan (O&M Plan), prepare and submit detailed design & drawings 60 days before the scheduled transition handover date (STHD). During transition Phase, the construction activities as per approved detailed design and drawing for transmission mains system will be carried out.
Contract-B: During start-up phase, the operator will carry out topographical surveys and investigation, carry out consumer surveys, and creation of consumer database, billing of service area, GIS mapping of all water supply assets, identification of DMA boundaries, hydraulic modelling of water supply network, preparation and approval of comprehensive assessment report (CAR), transition handover plan (THP), and O&M, prepare and submit detailed design and drawings with cost estimate for Package 1 of hydraulic zones sixty (60) days before the STHD)of Hydraulic Package-1. During transition Phase, the Operator will prepare and submit detailed design & drawings with cost estimate for Package 2 to 10 of Hydraulic zones 60 days before the STHD of the respective Packages in accordance with Schedule 28 of the performance based contract (PBC).
The work is likely to be completed in 5,475 days at an estimated cost of Rs 4.5 billion.
The project is a part of the Greater Shimla Water Supply and Sewerage project, planned for addressing the water and sewerage challenges in Shimla, the surrounding areas of Shoghi, Kufri and Ghanahatti and residential townships being developed by Himachal Pradesh Housing and Urban Development Authority (HIMUDA), together known as Greater Shimla Area. It is being implemented by SJPNL, incorporated by Government of Himachal Pradesh (GoHP) and Shimla Municipal Corporation, in Himachal Pradesh.
