The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has installed 372 of the planned 456 flow meters across water treatment plants (WTPs), distribution stations and filling stations. The remaining 84 meters are expected to be installed soon. The interventions were taken up under an initiative to track and reduce water losses in the city’s distribution network. The meters will help the utility measure non-revenue water, treated water that is lost through ageing pipelines, etc.
The data will also help identify supply gaps across different parts of the city and improve the equitable distribution of water. CMWSSB currently supplies around 1,250 million litres per day (mld) to more than 1.7 million consumers, while nearly 98 per cent of connections remain unmetered. Its smart metering programme aims to cover 80 per cent of domestic and commercial connections by 2027.
