The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has become a model city in India for its circular economy. The city now successfully generates revenue through reuse of wastewater.  At present, Surat generates funds to the tune of Rs 1.40 billion by selling 115 million litres per day (mld) water recycled from wastewater. In the future, the city aims to generate Rs 5 billion through selling the treated water for non-potable uses. Further, SMC has also undertaken initiatives for protecting its natural water resources. SMC’s blocked 44 outlets of wastewater that used to be released into Tapi river and thereby preventing 370 mld wastewater from mixing with river water.

Going forward, SMC aims to become a net zero liquid discharge city. The city generates 1,000 mld wastewater and aims to treat and reuse it entirely in the future.
