The World Bank (WB) has authorised a financial outlay of Rs 18.25 billion for the water supply and sewerage services delivery programme in the Greater Shimla region. The project will be completed by 2026. The WB would provide Rs 11.68 billion of the total Rs 18.25 billion, with the Himachal Pradesh government bearing the remaining Rs 6.57 billion.

Shimla’s water supply from the Sutlej will be supplemented with an extra 67 million litres per day under the project, which will fulfil demand until 2050. It will also provide 24-hour water service to all household and commercial customers, as well as better sewerage services in the Shimla Municipality. The WB, the department of economic affairs, the Centre, and the state urban development department will shortly sign an agreement.
